President's Message:

Our sharp-eyed members may have noticed a phrase that now appears on our communications: “Get Connected, Stay Connected”. This is the official slogan of Probus Canada and those four words accurately describe our purpose.

Oscar Wilde wrote “Ultimately, the bond of all companionship, whether in marriage or in friendship, is conversation”. And how do we communicate and connect? Most often it is with conversation. Perhaps you have had the experience that the right conversation, at the right moment, can change everything! And there are few things better in this life than truly connecting with another person, feeling that exquisite moment of being genuinely heard and understood by another person.

I am so gratified to see and hear the many conversations that go on within our Club. Whether it is the sound of so many conversations during our meeting breaks, or people getting to know one another better at a Dine Out/Dine In, during a book club discussion or a spirited game of euchre, or in our many other activities, these conversations can lead to a sense of community, belonging and ultimately friendship.

When asked about the choice she would make if she could recover just one of her senses, Helen Keller replied “blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people”. Without our hearing, those enjoyable conversations can become difficult; even our relationships can be affected.

So I hope you will plan to attend our next meeting when we will welcome Wendy Beth Moore, an award-winning researcher who will speak to us about the many aspects of hearing health and the far-reaching repercussions of hearing loss. While her topic is serious, she is an amusing and informative speaker and I suspect she will tell you some things you didn’t know.

I look forward to seeing you on April 16th.

Nancy Holmes,
President
