It seems like only yesterday that I accepted the honor of becoming President of our Probus Club, and yet May 21st was the last general meeting when I rang that big bell to mark the end of our 2024/25 term. And what a term we’ve had! We celebrated the Club’s 15th Anniversary with special guests. We learned about life, and loss. We enjoyed an insider’s peek into the lives of Britain’s Royals. We travelled abroad and expanded our knowledge about important health matters and the future of education. And who could forget the exciting biography of one of Canada’s most colorful Mayors? Our Vice President, Moira C, has relentlessly sought out speakers who will shed light on interesting topics to enrich our lives. Under the creative direction of our Social Events Coordinator, Marg D, your Social Committee - Gail C, Brigitte D, Ronalee P and Nancy H - has kept us all busy with many opportunities for “fellowship, friendship and FUN” - and occasionally that fourth “F”, food! We’ve dined In, and Out, and we look forward to sharing our Spring Celebration luncheon on June 18th. Our interest groups continue to thrive and we’re about to enjoy some exercise with the new City Explorers. Thank you to our Group convenors. As Membership Coordinator, Nancy F has welcomed many new applicants into our Club and accurately maintains our membership records; membership now stands at 128. Thank you to all the members who have invited friends and family members to our meetings, and encouraged them to become part of our fellowship. Our Club could not function without our Treasurer, Mike S, who carefully monitors our finances to keep us fiscally sound. We are grateful for Brigitte D, who, after several years as Newsletter Editor, will stand for election to the position of Member at Large on the Management Committee. With Brigitte’s assistance, Marcel D has capably taken on the responsibility for our Newsletter, along with the website and eBlasts. We have appreciated the steady guidance of Past Presidents Jim and Sandra G, who have reliably contributed their knowledge and experience to our Management Committee. We are about to bid farewell to our Club Secretary, Liz G, as she leaves our Committee. We have been so grateful as she has intelligently made sense of our sometimes animated Management meetings, quickly producing excellent minutes, contributing her many years of experience to our discussions and maintaining our Club’s archive documents. We will be in search of of a new Club Secretary for the Fall, and we encourage you to consider if you might be that person! Our thanks go also to those who help with our meetings: Becky and Bette K in the kitchen, Marg C and Cheryl W at the Registration Desk, John W, Marcel and Bob H on our A/V team, and Louise S and Shirley H who help us to Share the Wealth! We also thank Marg C for her work as Cheer Designate, sending cards on our Club's behalf to those who are unwell or hospitalized and those who have been bereaved. And finally, thank you to all of you, our members. We appreciate your faithful attendance at our meetings, your participation in interest groups and events, your attention and questions for our speakers and your comments - even your criticisms! We learn from all of it, and always endeavor to improve. I do hope that all of you will enjoy a safe and healthy summer, and look forward to seeing you at our first Fall meeting and AGM, on September 17th. Nancy Holmes, President

Get Connected, Stay Connected
In her presentation on hearing health, our April speaker, Wendy Beth Moore, spoke to us about the many negative impacts that untreated hearing loss can have. Among those potential impacts were reduced communication, damage to relationships and increasing isolation, all of which could contribute to desperate loneliness. I was reminded of the work of Dixon Chibanda who pioneered the Friendship Bench, where local grandmothers sit with people and help them talk through their problems. The project was born out of a particularly traumatic piece of Zimbabwean history, where the Mugabe government embarked on systematic destruction of so-called “illegal” buildings, that left 700,000 people homeless and over two million psychologically scarred. In a country with no resources where almost all of the professionals who might have helped had fled, he was left with a community of 14 grandmothers, whom he trained to offer psychological interventions. In a randomized trial, it was determined that the grandmothers were more effective at alleviating symptoms of depression and averting suicides than conventional care. The essential difference was that, along with principles of cognitive behaviour therapy, the grandmothers could offer their enriched life experiences. The first step to an intervention always was “tell me your story”, followed by the grandmother summarizing what she had heard and reflecting it back to the person seeking help. And she could do this because she carefully listened to every detail of the story being told. The “price of admission” to our Club is that we all are people of a certain age and each one of us has those “enriched life experiences”. We have the opportunity to take those experiences and share them with others in our fellowship. And if we carefully listen, perhaps we can transform that fellowship into true friendship, the antidote to isolation and loneliness. And what could be better than that? At our May 21st meeting, we will celebrate 15 years of the Probus Club of South London. Our membership numbers are growing and many members are participating in all manner of interests, activities and let’s not forget, fun! We hope that you will attend this special celebration with our District Director, June Ayrhart, and we hope to welcome Past Presidents as well. Nancy Holmes President

Meet More People - Make More Friends – Help Make Your Club the Best it Can Be!!!
Our sharp-eyed members may have noticed a phrase that now appears on our communications: “Get Connected, Stay Connected”. This is the official slogan of Probus Canada and those four words accurately describe our purpose.
Oscar Wilde wrote “Ultimately, the bond of all companionship, whether in marriage or in friendship, is conversation”. And how do we communicate and connect? Most often it is with conversation. Perhaps you have had the experience that the right conversation, at the right moment, can change everything! And there are few things better in this life than truly connecting with another person, feeling that exquisite moment of being genuinely heard and understood by another person.
I am so gratified to see and hear the many conversations that go on within our Club. Whether it is the sound of so many conversations during our meeting breaks, or people getting to know one another better at a Dine Out/Dine In, during a book club discussion or a spirited game of euchre, or in our many other activities, these conversations can lead to a sense of community, belonging and ultimately friendship.
When asked about the choice she would make if she could recover just one of her senses, Helen Keller replied “blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people”. Without our hearing, those enjoyable conversations can become difficult; even our relationships can be affected.
So I hope you will plan to attend our next meeting when we will welcome Wendy Beth Moore, an award-winning researcher who will speak to us about the many aspects of hearing health and the far-reaching repercussions of hearing loss. While her topic is serious, she is an amusing and informative speaker and I suspect she will tell you some things you didn’t know.
I look forward to seeing you on April 16th.
Nancy Holmes, President

We Canadians of a certain age well remember the savage winters of decades past. For Londoners, we remember Bill Brady on the radio, talking us through stormy nights and the military called in to assist through impassable roadways. We also remember January thaws and groundhog predictions - but we were too savvy to be fooled into thinking that winter was over. Climate change may have altered the timetable a bit, but, despite recent tantalizing hints of impending Spring, we know that some wintry surprises still may be in store!
I am someone who enjoys a snowy day. One of my greatest pleasures is to curl up in front of our fireplace to read, with no sound but crackling flames and the purring of sleepy cats while big flakes drift to the ground outside. Like Star Trek’s venerable Captain Picard, I love the feel of a real book in my hands, and I too prefer my tea “Earl Grey - hot”. But I must admit that I also enjoy the luxury of effortless access to thousands of library books via my tablet.
Books have been one of my greatest treasures for my whole life. They are portals to every conceivable aspect of human experience, from origins of the universe to the [only slightly] guilty pleasure of a good beach read!
Did you know that our Probus Club has not just one, but two Book Clubs? If you too are a book lover, you might want to investigate their current offerings. Check the activities listings below for convenor contact details.
A Wrinkle in Time author Madeleine L’Engle described books as “stars”, as "explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly". But P. J. O’Rourke also offered some sage advice: “Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it”.
I wish you all happy reading, and look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on March 19th.
Nancy Holmes,
President

Education – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow – Where do you fit?
Laurie Farquharson has been an educator since she was 10 years old, paid to do it by the time she was 15 and has made a truly rewarding profession of educating others. She really prefers “growing others to reach their potential”, no matter what age she teaches. She has volunteered with many organizations, written several organization history books, developed leadership and activity materials but her true passion is the 4-H Program. She believes this program above all else has taught and continues to teach her and allow her to practice her “Learning to Do by Doing”, while growing others with these skills.
She hails from a small hamlet, Vasey, in Simcoe County near Midland, Ontario. She attended the University of Guelph for a Bachelor of Applied Sciences, University of Western for Teacher’s College and a Masters of Education with Charles Stuart in Australia. She landed in Mount Brydges after marrying her wonderfully supportive husband Brian and has raised four amazing children who all want to farm like their parents! She has also been blessed this past year with a beautiful grandchild, Miss Ava!
Educating others is her passion in life and what stories she can tell!

When I was nine years old, my life was forever changed when I met my new Grade V teacher, Miss Eileen Parrish. Miss Parrish was a unique personality: brilliant, vivacious, eloquent, tall and thin, hairstyle reminiscent of a greying poodle, and always, vivid fuchsia lipstick. She was utterly fascinating.
When not teaching, she travelled the world and then shared her memories, photos and mementos with her eager pupils. She taught us the magic of slipping a real silk dress through a ring (to spot fakes). She brought us into the world of classical music, “conducting” the more dramatic works with her imaginary Viking club. She insisted that we all create … something, be it art, music, poetry or science.
But perhaps her most enduring lesson was “always to look up”.
With the festive season behind us and the likely gloom of February about to descend, what might give us joy and hope now? It is often said that “laughter is the best medicine”. I have written here previously about all the good we do for each other when we laugh together. But is there something more, something even better?
In his book, author Dacher Keltner posits that AWE is that something. He suggests that awe can transform us by quieting the voice of self and “empowering us to collaborate, to open our minds to wonders, and to see the deep patterns of life.” And why awe? Because it "brings us joy, meaning, and community, along with healthier bodies and more creative minds”.
And where do humans so often find awe? It’s when we look up - to see the delicate tracery of frosted tree branches on a day that looks like a snow globe. It’s when we watch the majesty of a solar eclipse. It’s when we look up into the misty eyes of new parents, as they present their newborn for a first visit with Grandma or Grandpa. It’s when I look up, remember my beloved teacher and give thanks for all her gifts.
May I encourage you to look up today - perhaps Miss Parrish has some gifts of awe for you, too?

On my way out of a recent Christmas bazaar, I bumped into a fellow Probus member. We greeted one another and when I asked how she was, with twinkling eyes and a saucy grin, she replied “I’m old and I’m awesome!” She quickly added that she likes to say that because it always brings a laugh. And there it was, the through line of our Probus life, the essence of our 3F’s of “fellowship, friendship and fun”: the laughter. I look back at my calendar for the last several weeks and see so many occasions on which I was lucky enough to share in our “3F’s”: Dine Outs, a Dine In, our General Meeting, a visit to the Mocha Shrine, euchre, our Festive Luncheon, even more euchre, mahjongg, even our Management Committee meeting, all filled with stories, making connections with one another and always some laughter along the way.
Since 1938, The Harvard Study of Adult Development has established a strong correlation between deep relationships and well-being. Unsurprisingly, the study indicated that “human connection is essential for our well-being and happiness”.
We all have stories to tell; we all can make those connections. Thanks to the efforts of our Probus volunteers who willingly take on the tasks of the operations of our Club, those who organize and serve at our meetings and those who create events and social activities, our Club is able to offer so many opportunities for so many to participate. We give those volunteers our sincere gratitude. We also recognize and thank those who offer comfort and support in times of sorrow or need.
As 2024 draws to a close, we have a chance to contemplate, to gather and celebrate the season with family and friends, to lovingly remember those no longer with us and to create new memories to be treasured in the years to come.
I wish you all the joys of this Christmastime and look forward to the stories, the laughter and the connections we will share in the New Year.

Greetings Everyone:
As brilliantly coloured leaves drift down through the cool morning air and we find the first light frosts on our windshields, there is one inescapable fact at this time of year: another winter approaches. And with winter comes the possibility of snow and ice storms, potential power outages and other emergencies.
Following up on a February visit organized by our Social Committee to the emergency response centre at London Station #12 in Byron, I attended the Citizen's Academy Program there on October 24th. During this two-hour session, our “class" learned about the remarkable organization, coordination and implementation of emergency management in our city, including discussion of recent disasters, such as the Woodman Avenue explosion, the Wellington Road sinkhole, the fiery train and COVID.
We also received an informative resource package about the creation of our own emergency kits, self-care, pet care, protective measures and special information for seniors. I highly recommend that everyone take the opportunity to join the Citizen’s Academy when this free program is offered again. More information will be available from Public Safety Educator, Taylor Simmons, tsimmons@london.ca
As October gives way to November, our thoughts also turn to loss and remembrance. We will proudly wear our poppies, in memory of those who sacrificed everything so that we might live in freedom. In these turbulent times, we give thanks for them, for the veterans who returned, for those who continue to serve in our Armed Forces and for their families. Local Legions offer programs and special events to which you might consider giving your support.
Our website and this newsletter are always a treasure trove of information about upcoming events, speakers and opportunities to accomplish the Probus goals of “fellowship, friendship and FUN” for our members. We hope to see you at our meeting on November 20th, when we will welcome speaker Jean Alice Rowcliffe, a London, Ontario teenager in the 1970’s who grew up to become a Norland Nanny to the British Royals!

Jean Alice Rowcliffe, Nanny to the British Royal Family
Born and raised in London Ontario, Jean Alice Rowcliffe always had a deep abiding interest for all things British. The art, music and history of the United Kingdom became Jean’s passion and as a teenager she looked a number of study programs in the UK including the Cordon Bleu cooking school and the Norland College (training to become a nursey nurse/nanny).
One day in her school library she announced to her friends that she was going to work for the Queen which of course produced bouts of laughter. To prove them wrong, Jean set about to research such an endeavour and after graduating in 1974, she moved to England, secured a position at Buckingham Palace and began her journey of the road less traveled, with many adventures.
She has worked in both Buckingham and Kensington Palace meeting a number of remarkable folks along the way.
In the mid 1980’s Jean moved to California, for what she thought would be one year and ended up staying for over 27 years. A fascinating story unfolded while living in America but it was a story of acute grief brought Jean back to Ontario in 2012.
Over 7 years ago, Jean moved to St Marys… a favourite town from her childhood… where she has found the perfect community and place of refuge, while creating her quintessential British home and garden
Jean Alice Rowcliffe is very happy to share her many stories with you today.

Your mind is constantly working to win the game by getting rid of the tiles on your rack. It is fun and easy to learn, yet can be challenging. We can have groups of two to four per table, with a maximum of 10 players per session.

Tribe: A social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect.
“Finding your tribe” has become a common expression. But what does it mean?
It’s human nature to search for belonging. We tend to gravitate towards those who we believe share common interests.
We all want to experience a sense of community, safety and vulnerability. A group of like-minded people, speaking the same language and supporting each other as a collective, is to be treasured. Being able to share ideas, interests and working in harmony only increases that sense of community.
Looking for your tribe means looking for people who share commonalities or possess the traits we aspire to adapt. Our tribe is important because it reflects our values while simultaneously satisfying our need for companionship.
October is Probus Month, when our “tribe” celebrates 37 years in Canada, joining almost 35,000 members worldwide in more than 20 countries. During this autumn season, as the leaves are burnished and the weather cools, we give thanks for all of our opportunities to gather with family and our good friends.
I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing you all again at our next meeting on October 16th.
Please buy your tickets when you arrive for the meeting as the winner is announced at coffee break. The tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. Our September winner won $84.00.
