President's Message:

Older people often observe that “time seems to speed up”; we may feel that time moved more slowly when we were children. According to experts, our perception of days, weeks and years seems to be especially influenced by our perspective. Are we in the moment experiencing it, or are we looking backward on time? The perception of time also is influenced by memory and how much you’ve experienced in your life. A week in the life of an 80-year-old is a much smaller portion of life than a week in the life of an eight-year-old, which contributes to the feeling that time went by quickly.

Where infants and children are absorbing so many new images, it may feel like time slows down. But when the older brain receives fewer images than it was trained to receive, time seems to speed up.

The researchers suggest that, for those older persons, their lives probably don’t look much different than when they were 78 or 79. Our brains tend to lump time together when the days or weeks are similar; the year could blend together in the mind and feel that it went by quickly. It is the new and exciting things in a day that make days and months feel different, and set them apart in our minds.

So how can we feel like our time is moving a little slower? One expert suggested that we try to experience things that are new and out of our usual regimen, stressing that “variety [really is] the spice of life”.

Many of our Club members continue to embrace that variety! Over the summer, our City Explorers learned more about our hometown. Our Out of Towners enjoyed a trip to a beautiful gallery and tearoom, delighted in a meal and summer theatre in Port Stanley and celebrated together with a delicious potluck picnic. Our “gamers” have continued to challenge one another and we all continue to benefit from learning from each others’ stories and experiences - and always laughing together!

Our new Probus year promises a wide variety of interesting speakers and our Social Committee is hard at work, creating opportunities for members to socialize, learn and have fun! Our website https://www.southlondonprobus.ca/ holds a wealth of information about our Club and upcoming events and we hope that you will take part.

Hope to see you all at our first meeting for 2025/26 - Wednesday, September 17th.
